Fiberglass vs. Gunite vs. Vinyl Liner Pools: Which Is Right for Your Florida Home?

Choosing the right pool for a Florida home is one of the biggest decisions a homeowner will make, and the material you build with affects everything from installation time to long-term maintenance cost. At Pools-Now, we install all three of the major pool types — fiberglass, gunite (shotcrete concrete), and vinyl liner — so we can give you a straight comparison without bias toward any single product line.

Fiberglass Pools

Fiberglass shells are manufactured off-site in a controlled environment and delivered to your property in one piece. For Florida homeowners, the appeal is fast installation (often 2–4 weeks from excavation to swim), a smooth gelcoat surface that resists algae, and very low long-term maintenance. Fiberglass also flexes slightly with ground movement, which is helpful in areas with sandy or shifting soil common across Brevard and Indian River counties.

Trade-offs: shape and size are limited to factory molds, and transportation requires a large delivery route to the backyard.

Gunite & Shotcrete Concrete Pools

Gunite pools are built on-site by spraying a concrete mixture over a rebar frame, then finishing with plaster, pebble, or tile. This is the most customizable option — any shape, any depth, vanishing edges, beach entries, attached spas, and complex water features are all on the table.

Trade-offs: installation takes 8–16 weeks, plaster resurfacing is typically needed every 10–15 years, and the rough interior surface requires more chemical and brushing maintenance than fiberglass.

Vinyl Liner Pools

Vinyl liner pools use a steel or polymer wall structure with a custom liner stretched across the interior. They offer a lower entry price point and a wide range of shapes and patterns.

Trade-offs: the liner needs replacement every 7–12 years, and care must be taken with pool toys and pets to avoid punctures. For seasonal homes or budget-conscious buyers wanting an in-ground pool, vinyl is a solid option.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Fast installation, low maintenance, modern look: Fiberglass.
  • Fully custom design, premium features, no shape limits: Gunite.
  • Lower upfront cost, flexible shapes: Vinyl liner.

Every property is different. Soil type, lot access, HOA rules, and how you plan to use the pool all factor in. The Pools-Now team can walk your yard, review your goals, and recommend the right build — not just the one we want to sell.
